The U.S. Department of Energy selected PPL Electric Utilities to receive up to $71.5 million in federal funding to modernize 29.3 miles of high-voltage transmission lines across Eastern Pennsylvania, including the Lehigh Valley, Susquehanna Valley, and Northeast PA. Known as the Montour Grid Resilience and Advanced Reconductoring Project, the initiative utilizes funding from the federal SPARK program to rebuild existing high-voltage corridors. By deploying advanced composite power lines and fiber-optic acoustic sensing technology, PPL can significantly expand grid capacity, withstand extreme weather temperatures, and continuously monitor system health without requiring the construction of entirely new power line corridors.
Local power grids need to move more electricity to keep up with growing community demands and extreme weather. Instead of building new power lines through neighborhoods or countryside, PPL is swapping out older wires on existing poles with high-tech cables that can carry much more electricity safely. This major federal grant covers a huge portion of the upgrade cost, which speeds up power grid improvements while protecting local residents from seeing those expenses tacked onto their monthly utility bills.
