There is a proposed “Grid Growth West” project which is a major infrastructure plan designed to construct 220 miles of new electrical transmission lines reaching from the Indiana–Ohio border all the way through central Ohio to Guernsey County. Developed by American Electric Power (AEP) and FirstEnergy, the $2.3 billion initiative features four massive 765-kilovolt transmission lines—the largest and highest-capacity electrical lines used in North America—along with an additional 345-kilovolt line. The primary goal of the massive expansion is to reinforce grid reliability and meet unprecedented, rapidly growing power demands caused by the influx of data centers, industrial manufacturing, and tech sector growth in central Ohio.
Power companies are planning to build giant high-voltage power lines across hundreds of miles in Ohio to boost the regional power grid. Because new technology facilities, data centers, and factories require massive amounts of electricity, existing power lines are at risk of being overwhelmed. While power utilities argue that this huge multi-billion dollar project is necessary to prevent widespread blackouts and support economic development, local residents and landowners often voice concerns over land rights, environmental impact, and visual changes to rural landscapes.
